Vaccinations

Dogs
Dogs should be vaccinated against Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza and Leptospirosis; given as a combined vaccination.  The first vaccination can be given from 8 weeks old, followed by a second dose 2-4 weeks later.  Puppies can then go out one week after the second dose.  Annual boosters are required to ensure immunity is maintained.

If you have several dogs; or your dog is going to meet other dogs such as in kennels or at a show, he or she should also be vaccinated against Kennel Cough.  This consists of an intranasal vaccine (squirted into the nose) and is given yearly.  Most boarding kennels will require this vaccination to be given at least five days prior to your dog arriving.

Cats
Cats should be vaccinated against Feline Influenza ("Cat Flu"), Feline Infectious Enteritis and Feline Leukaemia; given as a combined vaccination.  The first vaccination can be given from 10 weeks old, followed by a second dose 3-4 weeks later.  Again, annual boosters are required.

Rabbits
Rabbits can be vaccinated against Myxomatosis and Viral Haemorrhagic Disease.  Myxomatosis vaccines can be given from 6 weeks old and will need annual boosters every spring.  VHD is given from 12 weeks old and requires annual boosters.  Please note that rabbit vaccines must be given at least two weeks apart.

Horses
Horses should be vaccinated against Equine Influenza and Tetanus.  The exact requirements for vaccination vary depending on whether your horse competes, and you should check with the appropriate regulatory authority exactly what schedule is required.  Reduced visit fees are available if one of our Vets visits several owners' horses together so it is worth checking with others if your horse is kept at a yard.

Other species
Please contact the surgery directly for advice on vaccinations for other species.
