| Meet Our Staff Jeremy Stattersfield MA VetMB MRCVS, Veterinary Surgeon (Principal)
Jeremy is the Principal of Burnham House - which is named after the town in Norfolk where he spent his childhood. After his training at Cambridge University he spent some years working in Dover before opening his own surgery on Castle Street. Many of his very first patients are still going strong even though they are now officially "pensioners" and he is a great supporter of preventative care for ageing pets. His great passion is wildlife, especially birds and sea mammals, and he is always happy to be called out if a seal - or the occasional passing whale - finds itself in trouble on our shores. He is a member of the British Small Animal Veterinary Association; Association of Avian Veterinarians and the Veterinary Association for Arbitration and Jurisprudence. Jeremy was nominated for national Vet of the Year in 2009 and again in 2011. Corinna McCarthy BSc(Hons) PhD BVetMed MRCVS, Veterinary Surgeon
Corinna gained a bachelor's degree in biochemistry from University College Dublin and a PhD in tumour immunology from the University of Wales prior to qualifying as a vet from the Royal Veterinary College, London. In her previous career she was an Associate Lecturer for the Open University and carried out research at the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine at Oxford University, where she continues to visit as a guest lecturer. Her veterinary work has included time at the Redwings Horse Sanctuary and The Donkey Sanctuary as well as seeing practice including the PDSA and Battersea Dogs and Cats Home. She has a particular soft spot for rabbits. Lisa Brown BSc(Hons) BVetMed MRCVS, Veterinary Surgeon
Lisa B is a familiar face around the practice as she spent several of her university holidays "seeing practice" with us while a student at the Royal Veterinary College, London. She joined us as a permanent member of the veterinary staff as soon as she finished her final exams. The newest addition to her family is Sir Cumberland, a four-month-old miniature dachshund. Charlotte Hussey BSc(Hons) BVM&S MRCVS, Veterinary Surgeon Charlotte qualified from the University of Edinburgh veterinary school. She enjoys all aspects of general practice but is particularly interested in seeing birds and most exotic species, and orthopaedic surgery. Outside work, she is looking forward to re-starting dancing and singing when she has the chance, and hopes to fit in some cliff-walking. She is kept company at home by her bearded dragon, two tortoises, an elderly dalmatian, and a cockatiel (when he's in a good mood!).
Jonathan Haycock BSc(Hons) BVetMed MRCVS, Veterinary Surgeon
Jon qualified from the Royal Veterinary College, London in the same graduating class as Lisa B - and ended up at the same practice entirely by chance! His interests lie in general practice and wildlife medicine and he hopes to become more involved in our zoological work in the future. Jon is a keen rower - he says he'll give most outdoor activities a go but there's nothing like a crisp morning's session on the water. Leasa Neame CertNES RVN, Registered Veterinary Nurse (Head Nurse)
Leasa is our Head Veterinary Nurse. She qualified from Berkshire Agricultural College with a double merit - earning her a special place in the RCVS' record books. Leasa loves exotic species and was in 2008 one of only a handful of VNs in the UK to gain the City&Guilds Certificate in Nursing Exotic Species. She is continually learning something new and has spent several of her holidays volunteering for animal charities abroad. Leasa also runs physiotherapy clinics for pets following spinal or joint surgery and can advise owners on the best possible post-operative care for their pets. Leasa was nominated for national Vet Nurse of the Year in 2008.
Kim Pressnell RVN, Registered Veterinary Nurse (Senior Theatre Nurse)
Kim started working at Burnham House following one of our schools Open Days and became interested learning more about the wide variety of species we see; qualifying as a Veterinary Nurse from Canterbury College. Kim puts her teaching skills to good use by training our three student nurses as a Nursing Assessor/ Clinical Coach and lecturing on the Veterinary Nursing course at Canterbury; and runs our very popular series of Puppy Parties! She also oversees the Pet Travel Scheme. Kim's horses and dogs keep her busy outside work, along with badminton and swimming; and she insists that shopping counts as a sport. Kim was nominated for national Vet Nurse of the Year in 2009. Fay Millar RVN, Registered Veterinary Nurse
Fay returned to Burnham House in 2007 following a break to raise her family. She completed two years of college on day-release to fulfil a long-held ambition of becoming a qualified Veterinary Nurse; and passed her final written and practical exams in 2010. She runs our popular Biology:Applied course for local sixth-formers. Outside work, Fay's family and pets keep her busy and she also helps out at a local Cub and Scout group. Martina Hood BSc (Hons), Student Veterinary Nurse (Second Year)
Martina graduated in 2008 in Animal Science, Care and Management from Canterbury Christ Church University College and is now putting her studies to good use and gaining more practical experience looking after animals. She is a local girl and, like most of us, spends her free time looking after her own pets (a dog and a cat). She also enjoys baking and is learning to tap dance! Martina started her formal Veterinary Nurse training in September 2010 to become a fully qualified VN, so she spends one day per week at Hadlow Agricultural College. In August 2011 she passed her first set of exams with excellent grades so is well on track to qualify in 2012. Laura Wilson, Student Veterinary Nurse (First Year)
Laura W has completed a two-year National Diploma in Animal Management at Hadlow College, Canterbury. She spent summer 2009 working alongside our nursing team, gaining practical experience in animal care and being taught by our experienced nurses. When she finished College, Laura became a full-time Animal Nursing Assistant with us and has now begun training with Canterbury College to qualify as a Veterinary Nurse. Outside work, Laura is a keen horse rider and competes at cross-country and showjumping events. In August 2011 she passed her first nursing theory exam so has one more to go to move up to the next level of training. Sam Hunt, Student Veterinary Nurse (First Year, Part-Time)
Sam is currently training with us part-time while she is in her first year of veterinary nursing studies at Canterbury College. She spends two days a week working with our vets and nurses learning practical nursing, and three days at College learning nursing theory. Hannah Carey, Animal Nursing Assistant
Hannah cares for our inpatients undergoing treatment or following surgery and can find the right meal to tempt even the most poorly patient. She also looks after the many species of wildlife brought to us and will see them through their rehabilitation - even if it means feeding in the middle of the night. She particularly looks forward to the end of the seagull chick season when her charges are released after a summer in the surgery's back garden. Hannah is currently on maternity leave following the arrival of baby Dylan in July. Hellen (Receptionist, P/T, Folkestone)
Hellen is receptionist in charge of Havelock Veterinary Surgery - our Folkestone branch. She is our longest-serving member of staff and as such knows our Folkestone clients so well that she can have repeat prescriptions and food orders ready before the phone rings! In her spare time Hellen loves choral music ("male voices, of course") and golf and is 'mum' to Toby, a west highland white terrier. Sally P (Administrator and Receptionist, Whitfield and Dover)
Sally P joined us in 2006 with responsibility for Bewsbury Cross Veterinary Clinic in Whitfield. She also spends some time at Castle Street overseeing the PetAid scheme and the administration of pet insurance claims. She has recently taken in Lassie, a 15-year-old collie cross who is a regular visitor to the surgeries! Lynne S (Receptionist, P/T, Dover and Folkestone)
Lynne works part-time on reception at Burnham House and Havelock. Her two cats, Fred and Ginger, keep her busy outside work. Katherine (Receptionist, Dover and Walmer)
Kat joined our reception team in 2010. Prior to coming to us, she had worked at an animal conservation centre so is quite used to seeing some of our more unusual patients! She spends some of her time on reception and some looking after our in-house lab work. At home, Kat is mum to five rabbits and Teddy the cat. Sally H (Receptionist, P/T, Dover and Whitfield)
Sally H is also a receptionist at our main branch, working part-time. Laura J (Receptionist, Dover and Walmer)
Laura J is the newest member of the Burnham House reception team. She enjoys riding and caring for her horses and three rescue dogs and would eventually like to train as a veterinary nurse. Alison (Receptionist, P/T)
Alison's info is coming soon. Lynne F (Receptionist, P/T)
Lynne's info is coming soon. Bill Butler, Practice Manager
Bill took over as Burnham House's Practice Manager in 2010. He doesn't believe in "never work with children or animals" as he comes to us from from a teaching career and working as a Youth Officer with KCC! He says, "I am looking forward to supporting a great team of vets, nurses and receptionists; providing all the 'back room' support necessary". His role is very varied and includes responsibility for the non-clinical aspects of the practice including finances and personnel. Bill is a long-standing supporter of theatre and local dramatic societies. Hannah Perrin, Admin/Researcher
Hannah now works part-time supporting the research and community work of the practice. One of her ongoing jobs is maintaining this website and she would love to hear your comments or suggestions: hannah@burnhamhousevets.com Milly Stattersfield, Practice Dog
Milly is a crucial member of the Burnham House staff - here she is helping with some filing. When she's not working, Milly enjoys runs along the beach and very long games of fetch. "Uncle Mike" O'Brien; "Uncle Roy" Perrin; and "Uncle Matt" Millar
Deserve a special mention for giving up their free time, considerable expertise and many technical skills to help keep our beautiful Listed building in shape. We are incredibly fortunate to have a 'network' of friends, clients and supporters who help out with our special projects - particularly the Christmas lights!
VETERINARY QUALIFICATIONS
What do all those letters mean? If you look at the staff list, you'll see that many of us have 'letters' after our names. They have different meanings depending on people's qualifications - here's what they stand for: MRCVS: The letters 'MRCVS' after someone's name means that they are a qualified Veterinary Surgeon and entitled to practice in the UK. It stands for 'Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons' - the governing body of UK vets. Find out about the RCVS here. RVN: RVN stands for 'Registered Veterinary Nurse', meaning that the holder has completed the training and exams required to be a qualified Veterinary Nurse and is Registered and Listed by the RCVS. SVNs are Student Veterinary Nurses and ANAs are Animal Nursing Assistants. Find out about nursing qualifications and uniforms here. Veterinary Degrees: These differ slightly depending on which Veterinary School a vet qualified from. All are equivalent qualifications: BVetMed: Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (Royal Veterinary College, London) BVM&S: Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine & Surgery (Edinburgh) BVMS: Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery (Glasgow) BVSc: Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Bristol, Liverpool, Australia and New Zealand) DVM or DrMedVet: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (USA/Canada; some of Europe) MVB: Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (Dublin) VetMB: Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (Cambridge)
Some of our vets have also done an additional science degree before or during their veterinary qualification - this is a BSc - or a higher doctorate - a PhD. Postgraduate Qualifications: Most vets will work in general practice once qualified and continue to gain experience as GPs. For those wanting to specialise, the RCVS has a framework of postgraduate qualifications. The first level is an RCVS Certificate, followed by an RCVS Diploma. They are studied while working in practice (by writing casebooks and sitting exams) and indicate that the holder has reached a high level of knowledge and skill in a particular area.
