Meet Our Staff

Jeremy Stattersfield MA VetMB MRCVS, Veterinary Surgeon (Principal)

Jeremy is the Principal of Burnham House - which is named after the town in Norfolk where he spent his childhood.  After his training at Cambridge University he spent some years working in Dover before opening his own surgery on Castle Street.  Many of his very first patients are still going strong even though they are now officially "pensioners" and he is a great supporter of preventative care for ageing pets.  His great passion is wildlife, especially birds and sea mammals, and he is always happy to be called out if a seal - or the occasional passing whale - finds itself in trouble on our shores.  Jeremy is Secretary of the Kent branch of the British Small Animal Veterinary Association and organises their regular lecture programme keeping local vets up to date with the latest treatments and procedures.  He is also a member of the Association of Avian Veterinarians.
Jeremy was nominated for national Vet of the Year in 2009.

Sophie Kay BSc(Hons) BVetMed MRCVS, Veterinary Surgeon

Sophie K is a graduate of the Royal Veterinary College, London.  She holds a bachelor's degree in bioveterinary science as well as her veterinary medical qualification and spent her first month as a qualified vet volunteering in India before joining us.  She has a particular interest in small animal surgery and anaesthesia and is looking forward to getting involved with the community projects we enjoy.  When she doesn't have her nose in a textbook, Sophie enjoys running (slowly), and plays for Dover womens' rugby team.  She also loves reading and doesn't travel anywhere without a book she's halfway through.

Sophie-Jo Walsh BVSc MRCVS, Veterinary Surgeon

Sophie-Jo qualified from the University of Bristol.  She spent her first month as a qualified vet volunteering at a PDSA hospital before joining us in 2009.  Her professional interests include internal medicine and intensive care, having studied special courses in both at University.  She is also a Marine Mammal Medic.  In her free time, Sophie-Jo has a passion for music - both playing (classical and jazz piano) and listening (more gigs than she can remember!).

Mark Hedberg DVM MRCVS, Veterinary Surgeon

Mark joined the Burnham House family via a very international route: he was born in Portland, Oregon; qualified from Budapest in 2006, and joined us in 2010 from three years in practice in the Middle East.  He likes his patients furry, fuzzy or scaly!  He and his wife have an orange cat, Chilli, who is not spoiled at all.  Outside work, Mark enjoys playing guitar and American square dancing.

Corinna McCarthy BSc(Hons) PhD BVetMed MRCVS, Veterinary Surgeon

Corinna gained a bachelor's degree in biochemistry from University College Dublin and a PhD in tumour immunology from the University of Wales prior to qualifying as a vet from the Royal Veterinary College, London.

Denifer Lai BVSc MRCVS, Veterinary Surgeon

Den qualified from the University of Melbourne in 2005.

Laura Pugh BVM&S MRCVS, Veterinary Surgeon

Laura is a graduate of the University of Edinburgh veterinary school.

Leasa Neame CertNES RVN, Registered Veterinary Nurse (Head Veterinary Nurse)

Leasa is our Head Veterinary Nurse.  She qualified from Berkshire Agricultural College with a double merit - earning her a special place in the RCVS' record books.  Leasa loves exotic species and was in 2008 one of only a handful of VNs in the UK to gain the City&Guilds Certificate in Nursing Exotic Species.  She is continually learning something new and has spent several of her holidays volunteering for animal charities abroad.  Leasa also runs physiotherapy clinics for pets following spinal or joint surgery and can advise owners on the best possible post-operative care for their pets.
Leasa was nominated for national Vet Nurse of the Year in 2008.

Kim Pressnell RVN, Registered Veterinary Nurse (Senior Theatre Nurse/Nursing Assessor)

Kim started working at Burnham House following one of our schools Open Days and became interested learning more about the wide variety of species we see; qualifying from Canterbury College.  Kim puts her teaching skills to good use by training our student nurses as a Nursing Assessor/Clinical Coach; and runs our very popular series of Puppy Parties!  She also oversees the Pet Travel Scheme.  Kim's horses and dogs keep her busy outside work, along with badminton and swimming; and she insists that shopping counts as a sport.
Kim was nominated for national Vet Nurse of the Year in 2009.

Jo Francis RVN, Registered Veterinary Nurse

Jo has now successfully completed the final year of her college course and passed her written and practical exams, becoming a fully qualified Veterinary Nurse in 2009.  Before coming to us, Jo spent several months volunteering with an orang-utan rehabilitation centre in Borneo, experience that stood her in good stead for our zoo and exotics work.  Outside work, she loves snowboarding and is 'mum' to three chinchillas and a rabbit.

Fay Millar, Student Veterinary Nurse

Fay is our current VN trainee and returned to Burnham House in 2007 following a break to raise her family.  She has now completed two years of college on day-release to fulfil a long-held ambition of becoming a qualified Veterinary Nurse and will sit her final exams this year. Outside work, Fay's family and pets keep her busy and she also helps out at a local Cub and Scout group.

Hannah Carey, Animal Nursing Assistant

Hannah C cares for our inpatients undergoing treatment or following surgery and can find the right meal to tempt even the most poorly patient.  She also looks after the many species of wildlife brought to us and will see them through their rehabilitation - even if it means feeding in the middle of the night.  She particularly looks forward to the end of the seagull chick season when her charges are released after a summer in the surgery's back garden.

Martina Hood BSc, Animal Nursing Assistant

Martina graduated in 2008 in Animal Science, Care and Management from Canterbury Christ Church University College and is now putting her studies to good use and gaining more practical experience looking after animals.  She is a local girl and, like most of us, spends her free time looking after her own pets (a dog and a cat).  She also enjoys baking and is learning to tap dance!  Martina will be starting her formal Veterinary Nurse training in September 2010 to become a fully qualified VN.

Daisy Hockley, Animal Nursing Assistant

Daisy is the newest addition to our Animal Care team, joining us in 2009.  She has a particular interest in small pets and is looking forward to learning more about the more unusual species we see at Burnham House.  Before coming to us, Daisy volunteered at a local cat sanctuary and has adopted three rescue cats Minnie, Pixie and Casper which take up a lot of her free time; as well as cooking and shopping!

Laura Wilson, Animal Nursing Assistant (2009 Summer Placement/Saturday ANA)

Laura has recently finished a two-year National Diploma in Animal Management at Hadlow College, Canterbury.  She spent summer 2009 working alongside our nursing team, gaining practical experience in animal care and being taught by our experienced nurses.  Now she has finished College, Laura has become a full-time Animal Nursing Assistant with us and hopes to eventually qualify as a Veterinary Nurse.  Outside work, Laura is a keen horse rider and competes at cross-country and showjumping events.

Hellen (Receptionist, P/T, Folkestone)

Hellen is receptionist in charge of Havelock Veterinary Surgery - our Folkestone branch.  She is our longest-serving member of staff and as such knows our Folkestone clients so well that she can have repeat prescriptions and food orders ready before the phone rings!  In her spare time Hellen loves choral music ("male voices, of course") and golf and is 'mum' to Toby, a west highland white terrier.

Sally M (Receptionist, P/T, Dover)

Sally M is a local girl and one of our main branch receptionists.  She has a huge soft spot for labradors and can never resist a pat (or a cuddle - depending on size!) when one comes in.  She has also completed a Tortoise Trust Care Course and has recently adopted five rescued hatchlings.  Sally is a trained diver and loves to travel to places that have more unusual marine life than the Kent coast!  She is also a Marine Mammal Medic registered with the BDMLR.

Moyna (Receptionist, P/T, Dover)

Moyna is also a receptionist at our main branch.  Her interest is in rescue and rehoming and she loves to see a homeless animal find a new family.  She has recently taken in Baggins, a rescue collie - much to german shepherd Hobbs' annoyance.  Moyna also enjoys making Reception a welcoming place and is always open to suggestions of how to make visits to us more stress-free.

Sally P (Administrator and Receptionist, Whitfield and Dover)

Sally P joined us in 2006 with responsibility for Bewsbury Cross Veterinary Clinic in Whitfield.  She also spends some time at Castle Street overseeing the PetAid scheme and the administration of pet insurance claims.  She has recently taken in Lassie, a 15-year-old collie cross who is a regular visitor to the surgeries!

Tina (Receptionist, Whitfield and Dover)

Tina is part of the reception team at Burnham House and Bewsbury Cross and also oversees our stock control and ordering system.  She has a passion for rabbits and is always happy to see a poorly bunny regain its hops.  Her show bunnies are her pride and joy.

Lynne (Receptionist, Dover and Folkestone)
Lynne works part-time on reception at Burnham House and Havelock.  Her two cats, Fred and Ginger, keep her busy outside work.

Hannah Perrin BSc(Hons), Practice Manager

Hannah is Burnham House's Practice Manager.  She has a degree in Pharmacology from Bristol University and a Level 5 Diploma in Management from the ILM.  Her responsibilities are extremely varied and include running the non-clinical administration and financial aspects of the practice; as well as staffing, PR and the "special projects" that Burnham House specialises in!  She has a particular enthusiasm for the educational and community work we carry out and regularly participates in local events.  Part of her job is maintaining this website and she would love to hear your comments: hannah@burnhamhousevets.com

Milly Stattersfield, Practice Dog

Milly is a crucial member of the Burnham House staff - here she is helping with some filing.  When she's not working, Milly enjoys runs along the beach and very long games of fetch.

"Uncle Roy" Perrin; "Uncle Matt" Millar; and "Uncle Mike" O'Brien

Deserve a special mention for giving up their free time, considerable expertise and many technical skills to help keep our beautiful Listed building in shape.  We are incredibly fortunate to have a 'network' of friends, clients and supporters who help out with our special projects - particularly the Christmas lights!

VETERINARY QUALIFICATIONS

What do all those letters mean?

If you look at the staff list, you'll see that many of us have 'letters' after our names.  They have different meanings depending on people's qualifications - here's what they stand for:

MRCVS: The letters 'MRCVS' after someone's name means that they are a qualified Veterinary Surgeon and entitled to practice in the UK.  It stands for 'Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons' - the governing body of UK vets.  Find out about the RCVS here.

RVN: RVN stands for 'Registered Veterinary Nurse', meaning that the holder has completed the training and exams required to be a qualified Veterinary Nurse and is Registered and Listed by the RCVS.  SVNs are Student Veterinary Nurses and ANAs are Animal Nursing Assistants.  Find out about nursing qualifications and uniforms here.

Veterinary Degrees: These differ slightly depending on which Veterinary School a vet qualified from.  All are equivalent qualifications:
  • BVetMed: Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (RVC London)
  • BVM&S: Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine & Surgery (Edinburgh)
  • BVMS: Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery (Glasgow)
  • BVSc: Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Bristol, Liverpool, Australia and New Zealand)
  • DVM or DrMedVet: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (USA/Canada; some of Europe)
  • MVB: Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (Dublin)
  • VetMB: Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (Cambridge, (latin Medicinae Baccalaureus))

Some of our vets have also done an additional science degree before or during their veterinary qualification - this is a BSc.

Postgraduate Qualifications:

Most vets will work in general practice once qualified and continue to gain experience as GPs.  For those wanting to specialise, the RCVS has a framework of postgraduate qualifications.  The first level is an RCVS Certificate, followed by an RCVS Diploma.  They are studied while working in practice (by writing casebooks and sitting exams) and indicate that the holder has reached a high level of knowledge and skill in a particular area.  Find out more here.
