Dock Rock 2009

WE ROCKED!

A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who came along to DOCK ROCK 2009.

To everyone who volunteered, helped, spread the word, played, sang, donated, or simply came along to enjoy the music and great atmosphere - thank you!

You helped make Dock Rock 2009 the best yet.

We were able to make four-figure donations to each of our three charities - the RNLI Dover Lifeboat, St Martin's Emmaus, and Rhodes Minnis Cat Sanctuary.

It's that time again... Dock Rock is back.

In aid of RNLI Dover Lifeboat, St Martin's Emmaus, and Rhodes Minnis Cat Sanctuary

DOCK ROCK NEEDS YOU!

You can sponsor a band or a barrel, book a hospitality package for the event, or simply make a donation.

Here's how to sponsor us, and here's why we're doing it.

27th July 2009

Less than one week to go!  Here is what's in store at Dock Rock 2009...

OPENING 12 NOON

LA Music Club

This club for young musicians was formed in April this year and now meets in the Dover Leisure Centre.  Their aim is to give budding talent somewhere outside of school to meet and perform.  They will certainly be the biggest band Dock Rock has ever seen and will open the event with We Will Rock You.  After their set they will be hosting their own stage so if you know anyone who wants to play, or just meet other musicians, then bring them along

&

BBC Radio Kent's Steve Ladner

AFTERNOON BANDS

Mixed Emotions

Mixed Emotions are a husband and wife team from Deal who have now enlisted their son as a drummer.  They have been playing since 1991 but it's since young Kieran was such a hit playing drums on Britain's Got Talent that they have found the family in the spotlight.  They say not to expect any death metal or foxtrots from them but promise some great cover versions which will get you dancing!

Los Salvadores

This six-piece band, who gather from all over the south east to play, wanted the quiet life so formed Los Salvadores back in 2004.  It didn't work - Dock Rock is lucky to get them as they are doing two other festivals today alone!  A mix of drums, strings and vocals promise something guaranteed to get your feet tapping.  They are influenced by the likes of Bellowhead and the Levellers and are well worth getting in early to see.

The Kingsdown Band

It was 20 years ago that two parents who had kids at Kingsdown School began playing together.  There are now 12 of them giving us a set of great covers that will get us all dancing with their own mix of strings and brass.

Fair Isle

This four-piece band from Dover promise to give us some great folk rock using a mix of mandolin, guitar, violin and accordion.  Their name comes from a love of the shipping forecast and from the home town of the violin!

TEATIME BANDS

Phallacy

The Electric Beatles

This four-piece band from Folkestone will pay tribute to the Fab Four with an afternoon set you will probably know all the words to!

Floyd in the Flesh

Fans will know that In The Flesh is the opening track from the album The Wall.  They say that they perform "painstaking recreations" of Pink Floyd music.  They have been together for just over a year and are already gaining a reputation for authenticity and great musicianship.

Defrenchy

James Fairfoul and Andrea French have been performing together for a couple of years nwo and promise acoustic pop classic covers and some original music.

The Submission

A four-piece punk band from Deal, Ashford and Dover who have been influenced by the likes of the Clash, Stiff Little Fingers and Rancid.  They will play some covers but also their own material.

EVENING BANDS

User Friendly

They say they aim to please everyone with their loud, proud, fast and furious covers and original rock and blues.  A hit at the last Dock Rock, they were one of the first to be signed up this time around.

Hey Rudi

It was while bassist Slim was on retreat in the West Midlands that Jah came to him in a dream and told him to "return to Dover, reform Hey Rudi and preach my message of love to the people." How could he refuse?  So they are back, bigger and better, but not much wiser, than ever.  Expect plenty of two-tone covers and some reggae and ska to dance to as the night goes on.

Martin Matcham

Martin has been playing guitar since he was nine but it was earlier this year that he hit the big time when he featured on Britain's Got Talent - with his lit-up guitar!

Elbert Felc

This five-piece band from Faversham have been together since their teacher suggested they put on a school show.  Now in their mid-twenties they are going from strength to strength and will be producing their first original album later this year.  At Dock Rock they promise to give 110% with a mix of rock and pop covers and a tast of their own material.

18th July 2009

Less than two weeks to go!  The final band lineup will be published in the KM next week, but here's a taster of who you can look forward to seeing - live and for free - at this year's Dock Rock:

14th July 2009

Jeremy's been out and about over the last few days meeting some of the bands and making final preparations.  Last week he popped in to meet some of the people who'll be running open-mic jam sessions on the Youth Stage at Dock Rock... and to dish out some of the famous Dock Rock rock (which is as luminous green as ever)!

2nd July 2009

We're thrilled to announce that we have confirmed The Electric Beatles, Los Salvadores, and Mixed Emotions - featuring their son Keiran (who appeared on this year's Britain's Got Talent) on drums - to play at Dock Rock on 1st August.

Keep an eye out for our distinctive green and white posters around soon - if you'd like some posters or flyers to help spread the word, drop us an email or pop in to the surgery at 35 Castle Street, Dover.

8th June 2009

Hey Rudi was the first band to be signed for this year's Dock Rock.  Kit and Slim met up with BBC Radio Kent's Steve Ladner on the Dover Lifeboat.  Kit says "last time we played we promised great weather as well as a great set and we are planning on bringing the sun again this time!"  Steve has kindly agreed to open the event.

Also on board for the launch was Andy McMurray of User Friendly who will also be playing Dock Rock, bringing along their own blend of original numbers and covers.

Bands interested in playing should contact Jeremy Stattersfield via email, phone 01304 206989, or just pop into the Castle Street surgery.  Jeremy says "we are keen to receive CDs from a wide range of music, at the moment we have fewer young bands apply and we would love to hear from them now their exams are nearly over."

19th May 2009

Now that we're only a few months away, we'd like to ask for your help.  We know that many of you have already had informal chats with one or more of us and we'd like to confirm the level of support being offered.  If you've not come across Dock Rock before, we hope that this document will demonstrate that any support you can offer will be money well spent on the local community.  To make a donation, sponsor a band or a barrel, book hospitality, ask for posters, or offer us anything that you or your company already make or produce, please click here.

7th May 2009
Dock Rock 2009 will take place on Saturday 1st August 2009 at the Wellington Dock on Dover seafront (next to the marina).

Our charities
This year we will again be raising money for three local charities: the RNLI Dover Lifeboat, St Martin's Emmaus, and Rhodes Minnis Cat Sanctuary.

The RNLI is the charity that provides a 24-hour lifesaving service around the UK and Republic of Ireland.  Volunteer crews give up their time and comfort to carry out rescues in difficult and often dangerous conditions.  Dover operates a Severn class lifeboat covering the busiest stretch of water around the UK coast.

Emmaus communities enable people to move on from homelessness, providing work and a home in a supportive, family environment.  Companions, as residents are known, work full-time collecting, renovating and reselling donated furniture.  This work supports the Community financially and enables residents to develop skills and build their self-respect.

Rhodes Minnis Cat Sanctuary takes in and cares for unwanted and homeless cats and kittens from Kent, London and sometimes further afield.  Some are strays, others have been ill-treated or abandoned, but most are brought in by their owners because they are unable to look after their pets any more.  The aim is to re-home as many cats as possible, however those which cannot be re-homed stay for the rest of their lives.  RMCS has re-homed over 13,000 cats to date.

Dock Rock 2009
We anticipate that the event will run from 12 noon until approximately 10pm with live music and activities throughout the afternoon and evening.  Entry will be free and donations will be collected throughout the day by volunteers from the surgery and the charities we are supporting.

We look forward to seeing you there!

24th February 2009
Undercover investigations have revealed evidence that a Dover vets may be running another well-known community music event this summer.

At the last free concert, codenamed “Dock Rock”, thousands of people came to enjoy great music from local bands running into the evening.  Over £6,000 was raised for charity.

Organiser Jeremy Stattersfield said, “No comment”, but plans a week’s holiday after Saturday 1st August.  Watch this space…
